What You Should Understand About American Passport Agencies

A Passport is a government document issued to travelers who wish to visit other countries. The items are mandatory in international travel and must state the holder's nationality and identity. Passports, although they date back well before the nineteenth century, weren't internationally regulated until 1980. Today, passports from different countries differ greatly from one another with only a rough standardization. To obtain them in the United States, citizens must apply at one of the various pass port agencies located around the country.

International travel cannot be possible unless you have a passport issued in your name. If you have an upcoming vacation to the Bahamas or a trip around Europe planned in the near future, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to apply for yours. Especially since, lately, obtaining these documents can often take up to three months or more.

The first step is to locate a passport agency near you. In most cities, the post office is able to serve this function. Call yours ahead of time or check online to make sure this is the case. Check the American agency's website for local outlets around you. While you're there you could print and fill out the DS-11 form that is needed to obtain a passport. Bringing it with you will speed the process up a bit.

Two photograph copies of yourself will be needed to be inserted into the document. These can often be taken at the very same location as the rest of the passport process, although sometimes it can't. You may need your picture taken for a fee at another location and just bring it with you.

When you show up to apply for the government document, you'll need to be sure and bring a number of things with you. Before you can be approved, you'll have to first prove your U.S. Citizenship. Bring your original birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or a previously obtained passport with you.

To prove your identity, bring your current military id or driver's license with you. Your old passport, as with the citizenship proof, will also work well. To prove your social security number you may also have to bring your card with you also. Remember that copies of these documents will not be accepted. The passport agency will need either originals or notarized reprints.

Before you can be accepted, you will also be asked to pay fees when you show up to the passport application process. For all US citizens sixteen and over, it is fifty five dollars for the application fee and thirty dollars for the passport's execution fee. For security, a lot of the states charge an extra couple of dollars as well.

Once you have signed all of the appropriate documents and paid all of the fees completely, the Department of Security will look over your pass port application and decide whether to approve you. It generally takes anywhere from eight to four weeks for appliers to get approved by one of the United States passport agencies and receive their documents.
