Cheap Things To Do In Chicago

Cheap Things To Do in Chicago
by Theresa Carter

Don't let the Magnificent Mile, Oak Street, and 4-star restaurants fool you. You CAN enjoy Chicago on a budget without feeling like you're missing out.

The entrance fees at Chicago's world-class museums can add up, but there are several options to reduce the cost of seeing the amazing breadth of attractions. For $49, a CityPass gets you tickets to six of the city's biggest attractions (Adler Planetarium, Art Institute, Field Museum, Hancock Observatory, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium) for use within nine days.

If you're a Chicago resident, museums offer discounts. And if you have a Chicago Public Library Card, you can check out a Kraft Kids Museum Passport. This gets you into 11 attractions for free, but you can only check out one per library card.

The Art Institute is free on Tuesdays. It's home to the largest Impressionist collection outside of the Louvre, collections dating to 3000BC, and (my son's favorite) a great armor and weapons collection.

Contemporary art fans can enjoy the Museum of Contemporary Art on Tuesdays from 5 to 8pm for free, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography is always free.

Explore the history of surgery at the International Museum of Surgical Science. It's free on Tuesdays. Fridays you gain free knowledge of Jewish history and culture at the Spertus Museum.

Take a free architecture tour aboard the El. During the summer, the Chicago Transit Authority offers the Loop Tour. Docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation guide visitors through the history and architecture of the elevated train and its surrounding architecture.

You can kill two birds with one stone (figuratively, please) by having a meal or a drink at the Signature Lounge on the 95th floor of the Hancock Building.

Navy Pier is always free, but there's an entrance fee to the Chicago Children's Museum. However, it's free on Thursdays from 5 to 8pm. Grab a funnel cake, shop at the kiosks, watch a free show in the atrium, then head up to the museum.

Getting to all these fabulous places can also be free. The city offers a free trolley service. During the summer it runs daily, and on the weekends from September through December.

Dining and drink specials are too numerous to list here, but that's OK. There's a whole page of them at http://www.thelocaltourist.com/discounts.htm. Specials range from half-price wine to $2 appetizers to $25 3-course meals.

I bet your wallet's feeling a little heavier already.

(For contact information for the above attractions, visit the Things To Do page on The Local Tourist.)

E-Travel FAQs: Great Vacations Made Easy Using The Internet

e-Travel FAQs: Great Vacations Made Easy Using The Internet
by Gary Griffin

Vacation! It provides memories, relaxation, and exhilaration – a time to gather experiences and stories to share with others. When planning your vacation, the Internet offers you the opportunity to explore your options – and there are literally thousands of them available. The Internet places you in the unique position of being your own travel agent. As such, you can customize a vacation that suits your needs – whether it’s basking on the beach, sightseeing in an exotic place, or a family adventure to remember.

Where Do You Start?

With your keyboard as a control panel, you begin your planning by zooming in on your desired location. You can do this by following these five steps:

1. Make a list of the places you think you might like to go – at this point, don’t worry about price, mode of travel, or accommodations. Just brainstorm, getting all your ideas on the table.

2. Make a list of the activities you would like to enjoy on your trip. Do you want to go deep sea fishing, gamble, or play in the ocean’s waves? What about golfing, horseback riding, or fine dining? Rate these from the most important to least important.

3. Browse the Internet using the places you have chosen as keywords in your search. Read about the places on your list in more detail to determine if, in fact, each place will match your desired vacation activities. Consider the activities at the bottom of your list as dispensable, if all other aspects of the destination match your needs. Each destination will likely have its own website. At the very least, you should be able to find a local Chamber of Commerce or a Convention and Visitor’s Bureau site connected with the places on your list. These provide information on where you can stay, what you can do, and also provide maps and contact information if you have further questions after conducting your Internet research.

4. By following the steps above, narrow your list to your top two or three destination choices.

5. Begin an online search for the best prices for those you have chosen.

Mode of Travel

The mode of travel best for your trip will depend upon your destination – some places are most easily accessed by airplane, others are more “car friendly,” and still others might be best reached by train.

Airplane

There are many sites dedicated to air travel. These sites offer competitive prices on packages and also offer combinations that include two of the following: airline tickets, rental car, hotels. Many sites rate the hotels so that you can determine the level of luxury and location you desire – whether it is just a place to hit the pillow each night or a resort that offers so much more.

You’ll find the best deals if you look at the sites that specialize in reduced rates. And you will almost always find better prices on travel web sites than through an airline’s company website.

Some sites worth checking out are:

o Priceline.com

o CheapFares.com

o Hotwire.com

o Globe-travels.com

o Cheaptickets.com

o Travelzoo.com

o Air.onetravel.com

o Orbitz.com

o Expedia.com

Car

You may want to consider traveling by car if the distance between you and your destination is relatively short (Less than 500 miles), picturesque, and accessible. Keep in mind that you won’t want to be in the car for so many hours that you and your family are grumpy and irritated upon arrival. However, if the path you need to take involves spectacular natural beauty or unique attractions, you may not want to pass up the road trip as an added vacation bonus.

When traveling by car, you can still take advantage of the same websites that you would use if you were traveling by plane -- simply review the hotel ratings. Additional places to find out more about hotels are the online full service travel agencies like Expedia.com and Travelocity.com, local visitor’s Bureaus, and specialized sites like hotels-search-engine.org, lodging.com, and Hotels.com.

Hotels.com has a section of their web site devoted to road trips, which allows you to create a road trip based on how far you are willing to drive from home. In addition, map sites like Mapquest.com provide driving instructions and information on hotels, attractions, and dining along the way and also at your final destination.

Train

Travel by train is an often overlooked option. Yet it offers some of the sightseeing benefits of traveling by car, but with an added speed factor. If you decide to hit the tracks, Traintraveling.com offers information on rail tours and tourist trains in the United States and also abroad. The site offers tips for traveling with kids, a related news archive, and links to special deals.

As opposed to travel by airplane, where you get the best deals through discounted websites versus the individual airlines, you should check out the train companies directly as there is not as much competition. Amtrak information can be found at amtrak.com

A Word about Cruises

Most of the online travel sites also have information on cruises. As in traveling by air, you will always get better rates by visiting an online travel agency or ticket vendor than by going directly to the cruise lines. At the travel sites, you’ll find cruise line reviews, ship information, calendars, and details on the ports of call. You can always visit the various cruise ship sites to get more detailed information, and then go back and purchase your tickets at the discounted prices offered elsewhere.

Making it All Come Together

Once you have planned a vacation online -- even just once -- you will never want to do it any other way. Your keyboard literally delivers the world to your fingertips, offering you the opportunity to plan a dream vacation that won’t bankrupt your budget. While searching online, you may discover vacation ideas that never wandered through your mind before -- ideas that would be perfect for building memories, finding relaxation, and for experiencing exhilarating adventures.

Putting together a vacation online is easy. All you need to do is to select your destination, activities, and mode of travel. Then, simply search the online sites for the best deals; Packages offer more vacation fun for less money. Finally, pay for your package and print your confirmation. Read the confirmation thoroughly to make sure it is accurate. It is easier to correct mistakes early, waiting could cause additional fees and inconveniences.

To ensure a well-planned trip, start planning early so that you can spot any possible problems with your plans and to ensure that you find the cheapest rates. The closer your departure, the more expensive the trip tends to be.

One of Orlando's premier attractions is Disneyworld theme park. Disneyworld and the Epcot Center attract millions of visitors every single year, making it one of the world's top tourist attractions. Disneyworld is the world famous icon in theme parks and people travel from around the world to ride the rides and see the sights unique at the mother of all theme parks.

In order to bring more families to the area, travel agents and travel websites offer discount vacation packages to Orlando. Cape May County Park And Zoo

Cape May County Park and Zoo
by Matthew Keegan

Vacationing at the Jersey Shore, particularly in Cape May County, affords the vacationer plenty to do. From the historic homes of Victorian Cape May, to the vibrant boardwalk and beaches of the Wildwoods, up to the pristine shore communities of Avalon and Stone Harbor, and to "America's Greatest Family Resort," Ocean City, there is no lack of activity to do on any given day. When the weather is favorable, that is! Certainly, each town offers decent wet weather alternatives, but an opportunity to visit a well run and nearby zoological park is an option countless vacationers fit into their plans while visiting the area no matter the weather. The Cape May County Park and Zoo, located near Cape May Courthouse, NJ, is a destination worth exploring.

Situated one mile north of Cape May Court House, on Route 9 at Crest Haven Road, the combined park and zoo offers plenty for visitors to see on its 200+ acre spread. The zoo itself contains almost 80 acres of expertly maintained exhibits featuring about 200 species of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds totaling nearly 550 animals. Special exhibits include: the World of Birds, featuring over 20 exotic varieties; the Amphibian and Reptile House, with iguanas, snakes, skinks, and tortoises; and the African Savana with its lemurs, giraffes, and antelopes.

Even on the hottest summer day the zoo is enjoyable thanks to ample shading and plenty of places to stop and rest along the way. Very popular is the gazebo in the African Savana exhibit -- a popular place to stop and watch the giraffes.

Tired of seeing animals? The park offers a playground, a bike/hike trail, fishing ponds, picnic areas, and more. Ample concession stands are present on the property, whether you are seeking food or a special souvenier from the "Ark in the Park" gift shop.

Amazingly, there is no admission charge to the park & zoo as it is funded completely by taxes, concessions, and donations. The facility is open daily [except on Christmas] with the zoo closing at 4:45 in the summer. The rest of the park remains open for visitors until dusk.

Accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, the Cape May County Park and Zoo will be undergoing a facelift over the next few years to expand parking and create separate entrances for park and zoo traffic. Additional changes -- all to enhance the appearance of the park -- are ongoing and should please regular visitors and first timers alike.

So, when you tire of the rides on Morey's Piers or have done all the deep sea fishing that you can take, head over to Cape May Courthouse to the Cape May County Park and Zoo for an enjoyable respite from beach activities.

We Have Come Along Way In Our Exploitation Of Transportation

We Have Come Along Way in Our Exploitation of Transportation
by Lance Winslow

We sure have come along way since the horse and buggy or the first Model T that left the assembly line. We have attempted to build unbelievable transportation items and prototypes for instance; the Spouse Goose, jet powered bullet trains, under water autonomous vehicles and those X-Planes. Speaking of which if you have been to all the aviation and space museums you would have to be impressed with what we have achieved so far in air transportation, but we cannot stop here. Joint projects with NASA, US Military, DOT R and D and private corporations have built and tested many fascinating prototypes.

Having been to every aviation museum in the country, you have to be amazed at our progress in this century. Here are just a few of the museums we have been to;

http://www.aircraftwashguys.com/action.shtml

and look at these jet trains;

http://www.aircraftwashguys.com/tours13.shtml

down the street from the R and D, Department of transportation Center in Pueblo Colorado run by Bechtel. It is essential that we should continue research on all types of new and improved methods of transportation such Magnetic Levitation Trains, Hyper-Sonic Aircraft and space craft, Pelican type super transports, Mega-Cargo Blimps, Air-Cushioned Trains, Self Driving Trucks, Smart Cars, Pilot-Less Trains, UAVs, Underwater Unmanned Vehicles, RLV-Reusable Launch Vehicles Space Craft, Road Surface Safety Materials, Warning Systems and Smart Traffic Controls. All of these emerging technologies have been worth the research dollars.

We’ve come a long way in a short time and we must continue to press on and seek our human destiny thru the innovations and research to propel the human race. Think about it.

Spin Your Site Traffic Counter With Highly Targeted Tarffic!

Spin your site traffic counter with highly targeted tarffic!
by Jacky Leong

Spin your site traffic counter with highly targeted tarffic!

Jacky Leong

You're not going to make any money in your online business without traffic to your website (unless you are able to tap into somebody else's visitors). Knowing that all web site traffic is not created equal, you not only need lots of web traffic, you need lots of targeted traffic. That's the key and once you have it, your sales will increase exponentially.

Before I share with you the simplest and easiest methods to generate targeted website traffic I will begin with this one. The most powerful weapon I've used in my marketing arsenal lately is actually... through article submit!

Submit Unique Articles Online:

This technique is by far one of the least expensive (free most of the time) and very effective which I'll share in just a moment. The amount of traffic you can get from submitting a simple article is astounding, but it must be unique.

After you've written it up, you submit to the major article directories, then just sit back and watch the traffic stream in. With many new technologies around, there are software and even website providing top notch article submit service with weekly report.

The back links generated from high page rank sites that publish your article will drive you traffic.

Unique articles usually contain information that readers don't know, thus providing values where publishers like. This will attract more webmaster to publish your article because webmasters want only quality content.

An article that deliver values to readers will gain higher rating from publisher. Webmasters will only choose recommended articles for their visiotrs and readers. Highly relevant content to your website will help increase visitors' stickiness to your website and that equals to money.

If you have no idea in writing a new article, consider rewriting and old article by adding new information into it. This is one of the easiest way to create high quality articles.

1) Ghost writer 2) PLR articles pack 3) MRR articles 4) Write a new one yourself

An 300 to 800 words article will probably attracts more readers. They won't feel time wasted after reading an article which the reader found not interesting.

Discovering The Various Kinds Of Priority Passports

Discovering The Various Kinds Of Priority Passports
by Ben Pate

For anyone who has applied for a passport, there is likely already the understanding of various choices that can shorten waiting. But likewise, people do not always truly understand the various options for a priority US passport that are available for their use. The information listed here can be used to help you get a general overview of the options.

Though you can typically have your passport expedited or rushed, there are various conditions in which this is going to be the most appropriate option. If you just need your passport, you may want to use the traditional rush service that is offered by your post office. However, there are also other possibilities that can be considered depending on the situation.

Temporary passports can be an option depending on what your situation is. This is commonly the option that is used for those who are still waiting for their passport to arrive and need to travel. Information about obtaining these types of passports can be found on the government passport sites or you can also gain more information about it from some research on the Internet.

If your passport has been destroyed or stolen, you may be eligible to get an emergency passport instead. This is a highly useful option if you are in another country and are not able to really deal with your passport problem directly. Many websites are able to assist you with gaining an emergency passport in this type of situation.

Various delivery considerations can also be factored into your priority options. You will discover that the online options are always able to provide many delivery variances to consider. This can be options that range from anywhere to a week or less, such as overnight or next day shipping, and can depend on what your budget currently allows and also your passport needs.

The options that have been mentioned can be found on the Internet. You can also use traditional methods to get to these options but you may find that this isn't always convenient and that you can access your possibilities on the Internet easier. Otherwise, you may also notice that using the Internet to research options is also more helpful.

It is important to understand that these are just some of the priority options for passports. There are various others that can be considered and explored, which depend on if you are renewing your passport or you just need your passport to arrive quickly. Mexican Trucks In The United States; NAFTA Trade And Problems

Mexican Trucks in the United States; NAFTA Trade and Problems
by Lance Winslow

Expected new applications for Mexican trucks to enter the US to be over 9000 in 2005. Most of these newer applications will be to take freight to Port Los Angeles for shipping to Asian markets, and importing parts to be assembled and shipped to Mexico and later sold in the US. Many see a little bit of a problem with imported freight in LA stopping on its way to Mexico and unloaded somewhere without permits.

Dirty Mexican trucks will have that clay dirt on them and potentially noxious and non-indigenous weeds on their undercarriages. Since they have to comply with CA excessive grease laws they will be pulled over and cited eventually, but you have to remember the shear volume of trucks out there coming from over the borders. What about the dirt washed off the truck in case of contamination of e. coli and other non-local eco diseases, bacteria and species of insects? Much of their produce is watered with gray water and in some cases raw sewage contaminated water.

Others see another malathion problem brewing with little tiny fruit flies coming in on trucks over the border. If Japan again refuses to buy CA fruit again due to the infestation of another type of fruit fly or other insect it could kill CA agriculture business, which is still about 20% of their economy. There are not enough truck wash-out companies over the borders to clean the interiors and exteriors of these trucks and the water they moght use would also inevitably be gray water too. There is no time to build more truck washes that can handle 9000 trucks a day near the borders. It appears that the FDA will be instituting harsher requirements in areas serviced by the 10, 35, 25, 37, 5, 95 freeways. Many agencies are considering the disease issues such as the CDCs. Free Enterprise is looking at ways to service the needs of our people and protect them from possible contamination from foreign markets, but it is a monumental task and it really looks as if no one cares or sees these issues in our Blob of bureaucracy which has sworn to protect us from harm. Think about it. The bugs are.

You can't go to Cairo and not see the pyramids! Make sure you visit the Saqqara Pyramids, Sekhemket, Djoser, Unas and the Mastaba of Ti pyramids. You should take several days to see them because they are very interesting that you will want to take your time. It is very hot so be sure to take bottled water with you.

On Choosing And Using Your Luggage

On Choosing and Using Your Luggage
by Gareth Powell

Luggage has many schools of sort. Here are but some of them:

• Minimalist. Cutting down to the bare essentials so that you need only one cabin bag which you can carry on the aircraft. My daughter has this down to a fine art and recently toured India for two weeks with one small, leather Gladstone bag that I bought in China many years ago.

• The hard case. This refers not to the character of the traveler but to the suitcase used. Almost all flight crews use hard cases. Watch an airline crew collect their baggage from the carousel after an international journey and you will see that it is all medium to large-sized, hard-sided suitcases (nearly always gray) with built-in wheels and extendible handles. Sophisticated travelers sneer at this. But who, I ask, would know better?

• The suit bag. Many experienced travelers are of the opinion that a well-made suit bag will last for many years and carry everything you could possibly need. A suit bag used as cabin baggage on overseas flights will almost certainly carry everything you need.

• The enlightened traditionalist. This is a traveler who realizes that the suitcase acquired for the first Big Trip at the age of 21 will not cover all needs, all future travel. So keeps upgrading as time passes.

• Horses for courses. Differing bags for different occasions. As a matter of sober truth, I have 32 of the damn things. But I was ever the profligate.

There are, indeed, two main types of baggage. The type that will stand up to the rigors of overseas travel, but is so heavy it eats up much of your weight allowance. And that which is light and easy to handle and falls apart at inconvenient moments.

There is no such thing as ideal baggage. Only that which can be considered not bad.

If you are going on an overseas trip with more than four stopovers, your present baggage probably will not stand up to the strain. Get a new case before you go or you, too, will scatter your dirty laundry across the departure area of Dom Muang airport to the amusement of hordes of Thai travelers.

• Do not buy expensive name-brand luggage. They are called 'steal-me' cases on the reasoning that if you can afford a genuine Louis Vuitton suitcase you can afford to pack valuables inside. Look instead for something that is anonymous, easily cleaned and light. Don't worry too much about the quality. After a trip with four stopovers it will not have a long life expectancy.

• Do not buy any luggage which has built-in or hang-on gimmicks. They invariably fail. As do combination locks and foldaway handles. Zips are also perhaps best avoided. I have had several sad experiences with zippers which have left me physically and mentally scarred. You may well be luckier.

• Have wheels, will travel. In my experience, there is no rarer animal than the airport porter – an endangered species – and airport trolleys are not allowed past customs. Some are charged out at outrageous rents and you never have the right coin.

Therefore, a suitcase with wheels is not a bad idea. Some are easy to maneuver, some aren't. Test before you buy.

Better yet is a folding trolley which most aircrew members use. Get one with the biggest wheels you can. Oil the wheels before you leave, otherwise you will squeak, squeak, squeak your way around the world.

• Clearly identify your luggage with labels and tags, preferably plastic. Do not make it so that your name and address can be read by a casual, and possibly evil-minded, observer.

• Paste your name and address and telephone number into the inside lid. If the airline loses your luggage – and this happens less and less – this is one of the stock questions. Good to be able to give a firm affirmative.

• Buy a strap-around webbing belt in a bright color with a difficult buckle. Go further and use instant glue and pop-rivets to rivet and glue three straps to it. When these are tightened the bag is unopenable at speed. Thieves want the easy mark so they pass it by.

My current main suitcase has its straps fastened by rivets and glue and is, I think, probably thief-proof although that is tempting fate.

• Make your luggage look different. Even if you only bind the handle with bright tape, make sure your baggage is easy to recognize. This will not help in the recovery of your lost case – airlines only telex the style of suitcase to the last destination, not descriptions. But it will help you to spot your case as it comes off the carousel.

Exotic Island Wedding! Where Dreams Truly Come True In Paradise

Exotic Island Wedding! Where Dreams Truly Come True in Paradise
by William Lezubski

As a travel professional considering an exotic island wedding was a logical choice, but having to convince a strong Catholic family was the challenge I faced! I was never a traditionalist in the sense, and I have attended so many conventional weddings with a church ceremony and post-reception in the past, I wanted to do something different and special for the most important day of my life!

Island weddings have been around for quiet some time, but in my opinion, they seemed to be perceived more for renewal of vows and second marriages, however, as our lifestyles change, we separated ourselves from tradition, and an exotic wedding on a spectacular island seemed like a dream in paradise for me.

I met the love of my life a few years ago in travel school, and as our love for each other became apparent my only thought was, what if she doesn't want to have an island wedding? Knowing that her family is Catholic, and tradition is very important to them, I thought to myself, was my ambition of having a romantic wedding on an island not going to be a reality?

Even though I expected the worst-case scenario, the family was very understanding and accepted both our wishes with open arms, so the rest was history! The planning for our special event had begun, and with some consideration we both agreed on having our anticipated wedding on the exotic destination island of Cuba. We had the privilege of visiting this beautiful tropical island prior to our wedding, and we both fell in love with the extremely friendly culture, beautiful beach, and the spectacular exotic resort called Beaches, which is located on a peninsula in a small vacation town called Varadero, this is where we planned on having our special ceremony.

The Beaches all inclusive resort was not our original choice, and in the beginning of our research and planning, we decided on the Sandals Montego Bay Resort, which is a fantastic Ultra-All Inclusive Resort located on the fabulous Caribbean island of Jamaica! Not only were they including everything in their package, but they also offered a free wedding as long as we stayed at the resort for 5 nights or longer. Unfortunately, the decision came down to a single guests issue, and because a few of our close family and friends did not have a significant other, that particular resort would not have worked out for us.

I realized that certain events in life happen for a reason, and once we found out that the Beaches Resort in Varadero, Cuba also offered free weddings on the property, and accepted singles, couples, and families as well, we knew our decision was the correct one! If anyone ever tells you the wedding application process is difficult, get a second opinion! We went online and printed the resorts application form, faxed it off and in a matter of weeks we received a confirmation of the selected date and time of the wedding ceremony without any problems.

When we arrived in Cuba, the island location was exactly what we remembered, and the clear turquoise beach rising and falling onto the soft golden sand brought back some wonderful memories of our past visit! We checked into our very spacious suite, and for the first couple of days took part in the resorts endless variety of buffet and A la Carte dining, amazing entertainment, and non-stop flow of mojitos and margaritas!

Our special day could not have come any sooner, and we were amazed with the ceremony location on the property! The garden wedding gazebo was romantically trimmed with aromatic exotic flowers, and bordered with swaying palm trees. As the wedding ceremony commenced, I soon realized that two dreams were fulfilled that day. I not only married my soul mate, but we performed an exotic island wedding, and became one in island paradise!

Student Travel - Backpacking In Europe

Student Travel - Backpacking In Europe
by Richard Chapo

For the fortunate few, life isn’t complete without a backpacking trip through Europe. This right of passage is believed to further the maturation process of college students, according to sociologists. Of course, others have opined that copious amounts of alcohol, sun and Amsterdam have something to do with it. Regardless of your purpose, you still have to figure out what to take.

Backpack – Getting In Touch With Your Inner Mule

Obviously, the first critical item is your backpack. While one doesn’t need to buy the $10,000 Himalaya Turbo Pack, you should also avoid the $12 blue light special. So, how do you pick a happy middle ground?

The best method for picking a backpack involves three phone books. Select/swipe/borrow three yellow page books from neighbors/friends/enemies and hit your local sporting goods store. With the books, head to the backpackapalozza section of the store and pick out a few sturdy/cool/outrageous rigs. Stuff the phone books in, adjust the straps and go for a walk. Now break out into a run to simulate future dashes for trains/ ferries/ toilets and make the sales people nervous. These steps should quickly reveal the perfect pack.

Now, you may have read other publications suggesting highly technical ways to select a backpack. Trust me, until you have run for the last ferry from Italy to Greece, you have no idea how to pick a pack. The three phone book test solves this nicely.

What To Take

There are a few mantras that every person should chant before packing for Europe. These chants were developed originally by the little known, Oh-My-Back Monks of Southeast Asia. The “OMB” Monks were known for traveling halfway to far off cities, turning around, returning home and then traveling the full way to said cities. Religious experts opined as to the deep metaphysical meaning of such trips. They were later embarrassed when the monks revealed the back and forth nature of the trips was due to forgetting something, often whether they had turned off the iron. Nonetheless, such chants have become the guiding light of experienced backpackers.

Let us slowly and clearly chant together,

“I will pack only that which will not result in me being hunched over like a Sherpa.”

“Remember, I can pick it [(lower voice) toothpaste, book, soap] up over there.”

“I will not stuff thy pack to the point of bursting, for thy damn zippers always break/get snagged/refuse to work.”

“I will learn humility through wearing incredibly wrinkled clothes and shall not bring an iron.”

“I shall bring only one guide book, not one for each country that I MIGHT see.”

“I accept that I will come home wearing something I didn’t take and will have lost/traded/burned much of what I did take.”

For female travelers and, okay, the occasional male,

“I will not bring high heels or a gaggle of make-up.”

Admittedly, chanting these mantras will not bringing you immediate enlightenment. Fret, not. You can always throw items away or send them home in a box to your parents/friends/parole officer. For the resourceful backpacker, it is not unheard of to send particularly smelly/discolored/toxic clothing to an ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend/little brother. Follow these practical guidelines and you will soon happily be speaking in a loud voice to make foreigners understand you.

The Evidence

This is the hard part for most travelers to wrap their minds around. You will forget those special moments of your trip when you met the hunk Sven or babe Svenetta from Sweden and had a romantic evening/danced the night away/got arrested in Ios/Ibiza/the airport. Maybe not immediately, but you will eventually forget.

You will also forget or lose the contact information of people you meet, despite meticulously writing it down on the back of a coaster/napkin/your hand in a bar/poetry reading/jail at three in the morning. Surprisingly, said coaster/napkin/hand often survive the night/day/weekend and get deposited in your already trashed backpack. Of course, their presence is often forgotten when you later put a Oktoberfest mug/wet towel/toothbrush in. The extra padding at the bottom of your pack is specifically designed to deal with the decomposing result. Still, the information is gone and so is your future with Sven/Svenetta.

To properly record the magical moments of your trip, you must take a diary or journal. Don’t worry, you can burn it later before you get married/your parents get nosey/you have kids. You want a journal in a water/beer/sweat resistant case. Of course, I prefer a Nomad Travel Journal, but just make sure you take something. When you have some extra time in the bus/train/jail cell, you can record how you got there and the people you met.

Trust me, when you, Sven/Svenetta and your nine children are sitting on the porch, you will greatly enjoy reading your journal.

Of course, that assumes you didn’t burn it.

Panama Cruise Expert Guide

Panama Cruise Expert Guide
by John Metcalfe

Situated in the country of Panama in Central America
is the Panama Canal - a manmade waterway connecting
the great oceans of the Pacific and the Atlantic
together. It is 80 kilometers in length and is wide
enough to accommodate a whole host of ocean-going
vessels, including Panama cruise ships. The Panama
canal marks the only point at which the landmass
of the North American continent and South American
continent are physically separated from each other
- a fact that distinguishes the canal as a true
wonder of the 20th century engineering world.

The Panama Canal was initially designed to cut
travel time for vessels that needed to cross
between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.
It first opened its commercial doors on 15 August,
1914 and is now used by more than thirteen
thousand vessels each year. Along the canal's
length are three sets of locks. The locks act as
water elevators, enabling vessels to traverse
upslope/downslope across the canal terrain.

A Panama cruise takes in the full length of this
magnificent canal, revealing some awe-inspiring
views of an incredible feat of engineering, as
well as offering a tantalizing selection of
tour options along the canal. These include
sailing or kayaking on Gatun Lake, through which
the canal passes. Visitors can also book a tour
of the Panama Canal railroad, which takes in
dramatic views of the canal itself and the Central
American rainforests.

Vibrant Panama City with its eclectic mix of
architecture, people and culture is an essential
excursion to take while on a Panama cruise. The
historical district of Casco Viejo is well worth a
visit, if only to see the remnants of the 17th
century Spanish fortifications there. For
sports-minded cruisers there is a world-class
golf course located just 20-minutes away from
Panama City.

Panama cruises depart from many of the coastal
seaports around the U.S. The most popular cruise
routes are one-way cruises departing from one
port on the Atlantic or Pacific side and ending
at a U.S. port on the opposite coast. Round-trip
cruises are available too. These provide passengers
with more 'at sea' time, and use the Panama Canal
as the furthest destination point on the cruise.

Whether one-way or round-trip, Panama cruises
incorporate other stops en-route to the Panama Canal
and are often of between 10-20 nights in duration.
A typical 12-night round-trip Panama cruise itinerary
departing from Florida includes calls at Mexico,
Jamaica, Costa Rica and Columbia as well as taking
in the entire length of the Panama Canal. With so
much variety on offer, it's no wonder a Panama Cruise
is top of the vacation wish list of many an American!

Ecuador: One Month, $1000 Including Airfare

Ecuador: One Month, $1000 Including Airfare
by Steven Gillman

On my first trip to Ecuador I discovered that the official currency of is the U.S. Dollar. A nice surprise, since I thought I'd have to find a place to exchange money at midnight in Quito. Not only could I use the dollar bills in my pocket, but just one of them would buy a three-course lunch at a clean restaurant. I fell in love with Ecuador immediately. I fell in love with my wife Ana a few days later.

Quito, Ecuador

I loved Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Centro Del Mundo, the hostel where I stayed the first few days, cost $4 per night, including breakfast. The walls had maps and all the information I needed on them. There were travelers from fourteen countries there during my stay.

I took a tour to the volcano Cotapaxi, and hiked up to the glaciers with three others, from Israel, France and England. I danced (Free Rum in the hostel on Friday nights), wandered the city streets, and took spanish lessons from a beautiful tutor. Ana was not only a great teacher, but soon became my tour guide and, eventually, my wife.

Riobamba, Ecuador

Riobamba is another beautiful mountain city. My hotel was $3 per night, this time in a private room with a TV. The manager had connections, and information on anything I wanted. He arranged for a guide to take me up Mount Chimborazo, which at 20,600 feet is the furthest point from the center of the Earth (due to the bulge at the equator). After climbing 4,000 feet of glaciers, I made it to the summit.

Banos, Ecuador

Back in Quito, I called Ana, and we made plans to go to Banos De Santa Agua, a town in central Ecuador, famous for its hotsprings. The bus was $3, a nice motel with cable T.V. cost $7 per night. The second day there, we ate out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, went to the hotsprings, bought souvenirs, went to a movie, went out drinking and dancing - and the entire day, including motel, cost $34!

In fact, the entire trip, including airfare, the fee for the guide on Chimborazo, and everything else, cost $1040. That was for four weeks. How I kept it so cheap is a subject for another article.

More Information on Ecuador

The mountain towns (Quito, Riobamba, Loja, Cuenca, Otavalo, Ibarra, Ambato, Latacunga) have wonderful climates. Highs are in the 60s to 70s Fahrenheit year-round. Guayaquil and the coastal cities can be hot, but the temperature is moderated by the Humboldt Current, which brings cool water along the coast of South America.

If you like beaches, you have many options. In Salinas, for example, you can sit on a beautiful Pacific Ocean beach, while vendors bring you everything from beer to ice cream to chair rentals a music. For $20 you can rent a jet ski and have some fun in the waves.

The Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador, and tour information is available in all major cities (It's cheaper to wait until you're in Ecuador to book a tour).

Good meals can still be had for under two dollars in most cities, if you eat where the locals do. Hotels in most cities start at around $12 (less for a bed in a hostel). Cross-country travel by bus is cheaper and more comfortable than bus travel in the U.S.

The people of Ecuador are almost universally friendly, and speak one of the clearest, easiest to understand dialects of Spanish (A great place to learn). Ecuador is a safe, democratic republic, with a legal system similar to that of the U.S.

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the United States and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. Read their stories, tips and travel information at: http://www.EverythingAboutTravel.com

Sydney Driving Holiday -- Mucking About In The Country

Sydney Driving Holiday -- Mucking About in the Country
by Alyssa Betts

People in Sydney sometimes give the impression that they dress up to the nines in order to pop down the local shop and buy a loaf of bread (although possibly not so much in the blue-collar areas such as the Western suburbs). So, when visiting this fair and fashionable city, it’s quite likely you’ll strap on your trendy shoes and stroll about the place – draping yourself artistically in cafes, restaurants, galleries and theatres.

But there’s only so much of that you should have to put up with – something you might find slightly refreshing is girding up in a pair of trusty jeans and comfy shoes, and heading off for a bit of an adventure in NSW’s Central West region. Studded about the place are national parks, old gold rush sites, vineyards, Arcadian swathes of landscape, and the birthplace of one of Australia’s most legendary bush poets. And on the way you can wander about the gorgeous Blue Mountains.

If you don’t have a car, check out sites like www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au which have all the specials of the country’s biggest car hire companies so you can grab a good car rental Sydney deal.

Heading out West from Sydney, it’ll take around two hours to get to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. There’s loads of accommodation here, ranging from the luxurious to the hmmm-perhaps-we-should-have-camped. Nearby the scenery will keep you engrossed, with pleasures such as The Three Sisters and Katoomba Falls. The Scenic Railway is a handy means of seeing the countryside without having to move your legs. And there’s plenty of little towns around for you to forage about in. Leura is a great little spot. The short main street is crowded by little kitschy shops that just happen to miraculously stock arty trinkets which complement of the vibe of the place. You may struggle to remember how you managed to live so long without a highly decorative teapot with matching cozy.

After you’ve become the owner of the world’s largest collection of bunya nut vinaigrette, climb back into your car and aim for Bathurst. It’s a short drive on the Great Western Highway. For a regional town, you might notice the buildings seem to have quite a faded look of opulence. This is the mark of gold my friend. There are plenty of old gold towns nearby like Sofola and Wattle Flat, and if you feel its necessary to grab a pan and have a go at gold hunting yourself, head out to Hill End where there’s equipment to hire. Bathurst is also home to the Mount Panorama racing circuit – you might have heard of it, it becomes the focus of a few racing enthusiasts every year.

Onwards in a westerly way, before you get to a little city called Dubbo are the towns of Mudgee and Orange. Both places are fertile little areas which manage to produce fruity and winey things. Orange has got some beautiful parks and there’s also the nearby Mt Canobolas for commanding views. And it’s the birthplace of one Banjo Paterson. A balladeer that could immortalise a crusty old farmer in one line or less, while roasting the namby-pamby city slicker poets who dared to complain the bush was dusty, hot and boring.

Dubbo, which is only a little further on, is a city which struggles to disprove the idea that the only real tourist attraction it has is a great big zoo. It has some wineries and a gallery or two, and is one of the fastest growing regional cities with a population of around 38 000. But it’s the Western Plains Zoo you’ll be wanting to visit. It’s an open range affair, with the animals separated by creeks and dykes wherever possible.

It’s not really necessary to prolong your stay overly much, so heading north with your foot on the gas for about two hours will see you arriving in Coonabarabran. If you’re a space freak, then you’ll be mightily pleased by the town’s optical telescope – which happens to be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere – and the Skywatch observatory, where you can ponder the mysteries of the universe. For the more down-to-earth there’s the excellent Warrumbungles National Park nearby. This town pretty much marks the end of the Central West area, and unless you’ve got mighty ambitions of heading onwards and upwards, then it’s time to hang a right and head east to Tamworth. It’s a five-hour drive from Tamworth to Sydney, driving on the New England Highway until you reach Newcastle, and then hopping onto the Pacific Highway for the rest.

Alyssa Betts works for http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au and intermittently leaves to go travelling around various places.

Siberia, Russia Part 1 - Here I Come!

Siberia, Russia Part 1 - Here I Come!
by Richard Chapo

“You must really hate this job.” That’s what my boss said
when I told him I was moving from San Diego to Siberia for a
year. In reality, I was bored and looking for something that
would be completely and utterly new. Whether it was
sunstroke or a developing tolerance to margaritas, San Diego
just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Heck, I hadn’t even gone to
the beach in nine months and it was only a few blocks away.
Time to rediscover a zest for life.

As you are doing now, I trolled the Internet looking for
that rare opportunity that would renew my vigor and let me
brag to my domesticated friends. Pick coffee in the South
Pacific? No, I already drink too much of it. Sail around the
world on a container ship? No, I wasn’t ready for
involuntary self-reflection. Before I knew it, I had agreed
to move to a city in Siberia known as Chita. Yes, I was
going to be a professor at Chita State Technical University
through a program put together by Siberian Intercultural
Bridges. Donate - they need the money:
http://www.siberian-bridges.org.

So, what does one take for a one-year stay in Siberia? Why,
I’ll just go buy a guidebook on Siberia and read the “what
to take” section. My search of the local mega bookstore was
disappointing. Shockingly, there were no guidebooks for
Siberia. I was tempted to write a nasty letter to Lonely
Planet and others until the bookstore clerk said, “You’re
going WHERE?” When she started giving me the “you must be a
criminal on the run” look, it was time to go.

Fortunately, I was able to find experienced travelers that
could provide me with the details and items that were
absolutely necessary. My girlfriend gave me the
all-important electric blanket, a power converter and
intimate details about what would happen to me if I should
dare share it with another women. Grandpa gave me a World
War II down coat that was about three sizes to big and made
me look like a walking gopher. Family, friends and random
strangers contributed further items and advice that would be
critical to my survival.

Apparently rating my chances of survival at 50-50, friends
and family put together a going away/never see him again
party the day before I left. Of course, everyone brought
Vodka as a humorous going away gift. The tide quickly
turned, however, as all were asked/forced to try a “taste of
Russia.” Many of the events of that night will remain
forever sealed in antiquity, but it should suffice to say
that the wife of one friend went into labor which made it a
very fun night and subsequent day for him at the hospital.
Few got off so easily.

Gigantic backpack, electric blanket, hangover and I headed
to the airport the next morning. But that’s a story for part
2 of this nomad adventure travel series…

Really Cheap Plane Tickets

Really Cheap Plane Tickets
by Steven Gillman

To begin with, the best place to buy really cheap plane tickets is online. Travel agencies can't compete with discount ticket sites. Search Google ("cheap airfare south America," for example), or try the well-known sites, like Expedia, Travelocity, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire or Priceline.

Just now I checked fares from Tucson, Arizona to Traverse City, Michigan on the five sites mentioned above. The cheapest quotes ranged from $704 to $432. Nevermind which was cheapest (oh, okay, it was Expedia), because you never know from day-to-day which sites will find the cheapest flights.

Check at least three places. In this case, it would mean a savings of $272. The flight durations are within minutes of each other, by the way, and the food is probably equally bad on all the flights.

Flexibility For Even Cheaper Airfare

The more flexible you are, the better your chance of getting a really cheap plane tickets. Try different departure and return dates if you can. Check the box "2 or more connecting flights." Mark the "anytime" departure, even if you don't want to leave at midnight - the savings might change your mind. Try all the options. If the savings aren't enough, you can always book first class, direct flights, or whatever you prefer.

Really Cheap Plane Tickets - More Ways

You can buy two tickets. The cheapest airfare from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Tucson, Arizona costs $451 roundtrip right now. Las Vegas to Tucson is only $161, however, and there are regular $199 specials to Vegas from Grand Rapids. It's up to you whether saving $91 is worth booking two flights. (It saved us over $1000 when we went to South America.) There is the problem of whether you'll get a refund if your timing is off on the connections (you probably won't).

Check for package deals, where you pay for plane tickets and your hotel room. I haven't had much luck with these deals, but it can't hurt to look at them.

Buying ahead of time gets you cheaper plane tickets. Any thing less than a week away tends to be expensive, although you never can tell in the mysterious realm of airfare pricing. Sometimes the "last minute specials" are the best thing going.

Priceline still has their "Name Your Own Price" feature. Make your bid, and the airlines say yes or no, depending on whether they have empty seats to fill. First search for the cheapest tickets you can find, then bid lower than that. If your bid is rejected, you can return to the website where you found the best deal and book it.

If You're Really Cheap

My wife and I once took a bus from Michigan to Miami, and flew from there to Ecuador. For us at that time, saving a couple hundred dollars was worth 38 hours on a bus. This won't save you much on domestic flights. Right now, for example, taking a bus from Traverse City to Detroit, then flying to Los Angeles, would only save about $70 (allowing for cab fare to the airport) over flying directly.

There are other options beyond the scope of this article. Courier flights, for example, can be a great deal if you don't mind letting a company use your baggage allowance (you get carry-on only). There are also stand-by deals and last minute deals and other ways to get really cheap plane tickets. Good luck!

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the U.S. and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. For more on cheap plane tickets, and to read their stories, tips and travel information, visit: http://www.EverythingAboutTravel.com

Quarantine Of African Continent Eminent

Quarantine of African Continent Eminent
by Lance Winslow

The UN and the World Health Organization admit that the AIDS pandemic in Africa cannot be contained by 2015. This is a severe problem as it could spread to other nations. It maybe necessary to quarantine the entire continent of Africa in order to stop the pandemic from spreading world wide. The AIDS crisis in china is also quite severe and growing; meanwhile Bird Flu is at issue and threatening to spread the world over. We have American Airlines flying into Vietnam daily where there have been the most cases of humans with bird flu? It seems that is problematic and some conspiracy theorists are already asking, why is American Airlines always involved in all the world most deadly events? American Airlines is the vector for the disease to jump continents now, while the WHO and CDC warn the world it is coming?

The World needs to get a little more serious about these things, everyone is not thinking about the obvious spread of this problem. Bird flu once it goes from chickens to pigs may then get into the pigs respiratory system which can then end up into human respiratory systems and spread very fast like any common human flu and everyone says there is nothing we can do including the WHO?

Without buying into the conspiracy theory BS, the human race is being warned about how quick this can spread? Some say that this will help social security from going bankrupt because all the old people will die early before collecting their money. Others say that the Corporations are behind it because they are worried about their under funded pensions. But as far-fetched as all this is, bird flu is a serious issue once it goes from birds to pigs. Some of these same conspiracy theorists say that there are some evil bio-scientists behind helping the bird flu along so that it can make the jump and then launch on the human race simultaneously in many places at once.

The quarantining of the African Continent is inevitable, but what about some of these other countries with bird flu? If it is really that bad of an issue, then why aren’t we taking it more seriously? Is your family safe? Think about it?

Guide To Choosing The Right Disney Vacation Accommodations For Your Family

Guide to Choosing the Right Disney Vacation Accommodations for Your Family
by Art Mccarty

The secret treasure of Davenport’s and Kissimmee’s townhouses.

Though usually Orlando is thought of as being a big city with bright lights and lots of hotels, Walt Disney World and Universal, and more tourists than you can count, most people don’t know about the secret treasure of Davenport’s and Kissimmee’s townhouses.

Away from the usual loud noises and big crowds are resorts clustered off the beaten path that is usually trod by tourists who want to experience the world of Orlando. Though these tourists certainly experience it’s many hotels, restaurants, and trinket shops, they fail to experience the relaxation for which Florida is so well-known.

Getting caught up in the hype of a fast-paced mentality to see-all and do-all every moment of every day on vacation can be easy, especially when in an environment that supports it full force.

That’s why townhouses are the best choice when it comes to a vacation in Orlando. Not only do you steer clear of all the hype and hubbub of the tourist traps, you can enjoy Central Florida at your own pace, making your own decisions, and not giving in to anything being shoved down your throat.

How about a Townhouses?

Though it seems that Orlando would not be the setting for such townhouses, it certainly is. With so much do in Orlando such as seeing Mickey and Minnie at Disneyworld, riding rides at Universal, or seeing the splash of a whale at Sea World, people are always looking for a place to stay when they come for a visit.

Though hotels and motels are a popular choice, most people do not know about the other options that are available to them in the same price range, with even better quality than most hotels.

Not only that, but hotels offer one room, townhouses offer two or more, a kitchen, living area and some even have their own washer and dryer.

The key here is where do you want to spend your vacation?

Cramped in a hotel room on a crowded hallway in a small hotel across the street from trinket shops and fast food chains?

1. Or do you want to spend your vacation in a place that is off the main tourist drag in a beautiful townhouse where everyone in your family can have their own room.

2. Their own space, where you can cook the meals instead of going out to eat every night

3. Where you can watch a rented movie or have a family game night without feeling cramped in close corridors.

4. Where you can actually unpack your clothes and things from your suitcase.

5. Where you can feel at home away from home for however long you are staying in the Central Florida area?

These are the choices you must make, these are the comparisons you have to choose between.

The townhouses offered have many deals and discounts waiting for you to jump on that will make your stay in Orlando, Kissimmee, or Davenport a nice and comfortable one that will be affordable as well.

Close to Disney parks and not far from Orlando attractions, these townhouses area available to rent and are your cheap ticket to a stay in Central Florida that you will never forget.

Imagine a long day at an amusement park. Though it was wonderful, the kids are tired and hungry, you are exhausted and ready for a nap, and all you have to look forward to is getting back to your single hotel room where everyone will want some space and quiet.

How much better does a townhouse sound?

Townhouses will allow your tired kids to grab a snack from the kitchen and relax with a movie or go for a swim in the pool while you go to your own room to relax with a book or to take a nap.

Booking a townhouse to rent will allow your vacation to be a lot more relaxing and a lot more enjoyable.

Available however you desire, the townhouses in Davenport or Kissimmee (both right near Disney) are built with two bedrooms or more. The beautiful townhouses are a treat to stay in and nice to make into your home for the entire time that you are in Florida.

With the ability to make it your home away from home, it allows you to feel more comfortable and more settled. The beautiful setting is an added bonus to the townhouses with the lush green landscaping signature to Florida as palm trees dot wherever you look. Not bad when considering the other option is a room in a hotel with a window view of a parking lot or a neon restaurant sign across the street.

Request your desired townhouse size and find out the cheap renting prices that go along with the resort that has built them.

Find out about the specials that are being offered.

And don’t forget to ask if any discounts are given for specific memberships or cards.

Booking townhouses is not a difficult thing, in fact it is quite easy. Pick up the phone and call the resorts in Kissimmee or Davenport, ask them for details and information and then make your final decision.

Or log onto their websites and find out all you need to know from prices and sizes of townhouses to pools and restaurants.

Read Florida magazines and look for townhouse resorts in Central Florida. You can even call Orlando Visitor’s Bureau and quiz them about which townhouse resorts are the best in the area. Don’t be afraid to ask for information to be sent to you, most resorts that feature townhouses will be happy to send you information on their property.

DO your research, however, don’t wait until the last minute to make your decision. Though these are quite the secret among Florida tourists, more know about the townhouses that you think and you want to make sure to book your reservations before they are sold out during your vacation time.

Once you get to the townhouses, you will find out that there are many other things to do in Central Florida besides the highly publicized attractions.

There are outlet malls, numerous golf courses, beaches, theatres, museums, and activities for the kids that are too many to mention.

Orlando is a place that attracts visitors and tourists -- families, singles, couples, grandparents – people of all generations want to have at least one vacation in the Central Florida area to experience the sights and sounds of Disney World, Orlando, and all the shopping, eating, and swimming that they can handle.

It’s not only a fun place to visit once, it’s a great place to come back to year after year, time and time again.

The way that you will make great memories to want to experience another time is by having enough room to enjoy all the fun and laughter together. This is why townhomes are perfect for any family, couple, or group traveling and visiting Orlando.

You can enjoy all the same wonderful aspects of the city and get a break from the rush and crowds at the same time.

Come visit Central Florida in a fashion that will bring you back and in a way that will make you not want to say goodbye.

Spend as much as you would in a hotel, but treat yourself to some space and beautiful surroundings instead of a one-room box. What more could you want? Spend your vacation in townhouses.

Orlando won’t be able to get any better if you do.

NC Railroad Museum Enthralls Kids Young & Old Alike
by Matthew Keegan

Situated in the heart of central North Carolina along the border of Wake and Chatham counties, just thirty minutes south of Raleigh, is the North Carolina Railroad Museum / New Hope Valley Railway. Featuring steam and diesel locomotives as well as various boxcars, flatcars, and the like, the museum / railway has been entertaining train fans at its rural Bonsal location since 1981. Take a trip down the old railroad line with me and experience a little bit of American train history!

Since I was a boy I have been enamored by trains -- steam engines, diesels, bullet trains and even subways. My family feels the same way; we marvel at the sight of a steam locomotive hissing and wheezing its way clackety-clack down the tracks, imagining that we, too, are taking a trip across this great nation of ours.

This particular rolling museum will excite train buffs for the variety of equipment on hand, as well as, for the rides that are made available to the general public. Indeed, when we visited the museum recently the grounds were packed since ride days are held only on the first Sunday of the month [from May through November with special Halloween and Christmas season rides as well]. Five excursions are held each ride day; visitors are encouraged to arrive early for the ride they wish to take.

Pulled by a rugged General Electric diesel locomotive [built in the early 1940s], the one hour train ride allows passengers to travel from Bonsal to New Hill and back. The 6.5 mile track was purchased from the venerable Southern Railway Company and is now used exclusively by the museum.

Enthusiasts sit in one of two comfortable open passenger cars that are, in fact, converted flat cars. On a recent Sunday, the museum brought out one of the aforementioned diesels and added a pair of wood sided red cabooses and a brown baggage car to round out the set.

On the sprawling museum grounds sits a US Army Transportation Corps Tool Car which currently houses the museum's gift shop and exhibits. Various other cars and a crane boom tender are located on site as well; some are being carefully restored while others are in active use. Currently, the museum's steam locomotive is used on a limited basis, but plans are to begin using it on excursions more frequently.

The railroad museum is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers [Saturdays are workdays and skilled volunteers are welcome]. Train ride prices are reasonable and passengers know that the fares are helping to restore a little bit of train history to North Carolina while reliving it at the same time.

A "G" scale model garden railroad is on site along with a barbeque restaurant and adjoining picnic area. There is plenty of parking on the premises as well.

Yes, there certainly is much to see and do while visiting the North Carolina Railroad Museum / New Hope Valley Railway in Bonsal, NC -- stop by soon and you will hear the conductor announcing to you, "all aboard!"

When not busy writing articles on travel related topics, Matt manages two very active aviation websites: the Aviation Employment Board at http://www.aviationemploymentboard.com and the Corporate Flight Attendant Community at http://www.corporateflyer.net and http://www.cabinmanagers.com

What You Should Understand About American Passport Agencies
by Ben Pate

A Passport is a government document issued to travelers who wish to visit other countries. The items are mandatory in international travel and must state the holder's nationality and identity. Passports, although they date back well before the nineteenth century, weren't internationally regulated until 1980. Today, passports from different countries differ greatly from one another with only a rough standardization. To obtain them in the United States, citizens must apply at one of the various pass port agencies located around the country.

International travel cannot be possible unless you have a passport issued in your name. If you have an upcoming vacation to the Bahamas or a trip around Europe planned in the near future, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to apply for yours. Especially since, lately, obtaining these documents can often take up to three months or more.

The first step is to locate a passport agency near you. In most cities, the post office is able to serve this function. Call yours ahead of time or check online to make sure this is the case. Check the American agency's website for local outlets around you. While you're there you could print and fill out the DS-11 form that is needed to obtain a passport. Bringing it with you will speed the process up a bit.

Two photograph copies of yourself will be needed to be inserted into the document. These can often be taken at the very same location as the rest of the passport process, although sometimes it can't. You may need your picture taken for a fee at another location and just bring it with you.

When you show up to apply for the government document, you'll need to be sure and bring a number of things with you. Before you can be approved, you'll have to first prove your U.S. Citizenship. Bring your original birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or a previously obtained passport with you.

To prove your identity, bring your current military id or driver's license with you. Your old passport, as with the citizenship proof, will also work well. To prove your social security number you may also have to bring your card with you also. Remember that copies of these documents will not be accepted. The passport agency will need either originals or notarized reprints.

Before you can be accepted, you will also be asked to pay fees when you show up to the passport application process. For all US citizens sixteen and over, it is fifty five dollars for the application fee and thirty dollars for the passport's execution fee. For security, a lot of the states charge an extra couple of dollars as well.

More Information:

Once you have signed all of the appropriate documents and paid all of the fees completely, the Department of Security will look over your pass port application and decide whether to approve you. It generally takes anywhere from eight to four weeks for appliers to get approved by one of the United States passport agencies and receive their documents.

Deserted Island Top 10 - A Professional Virtual Assistant Shares Her "Must Haves"
by Lori Davis

Back in the day, when I was Lori “Computer Babe” Davis, I managed Microsoft and Novell LANs and WANs. I was constantly surrounded by high-level technologies and loved it! These days, my home office is on a much smaller scale and yet, I fully employ technology to make me happy and to make my life easier.

Submitted for your reading pleasure are Lori’s Top 10 I’m Trapped on a Deserted Island Must Haves. **

Microsoft Outlook

I L-O-V-E Outlook – one of the most important secrets of my success. I’m using the 2002 version while I contemplate the 2003 upgrade.

Outlook gives me all the tools I need and the three features I use most are e-mail, calendar and tasks. I manage e-mail accounts for numerous clients and Outlook makes it easy to set up and manage new accounts. In addition, Outlook's Signature facility is superb.

I use a third-party tool (see below) to help me manage calendars for my clients. Imagine having the ability to manage a client’s calendar who’s three time zones away. Trust me, it can be done!

Outlook’s Tasks folder helps me everyday, letting me know what’s due for that day and what I need to focus on in the future.

I use Outlook to manage my professional and personal lives, and the schedules for my clients.

Tools for the Home Team

Holy remote access, campers! 4Team has a great offering of products (http://shareoutlook.4team.biz/) that let you share Outlook with your clients.

I use Calendar4Outlook for a number of my clients and they’re amazed, and pleased, with the software’s functionality. Calendar updates are sent via e-mail and are applied automatically. No “click here to update” hassles. I see the client’s Calendar in real-time and book their appointments without having to call them to verify their schedule.

Invaluable tools which I encourage you to demo.

Believe the Skype Hype

Skype’s tagline says it all, “Skype is free Internet telephony that just works.” Checkout their site at http://www.skype.com. Skype is free (cool), easy to set up and even easier to use. Skype is Internet telephony and an instant messaging package all in one.

I used Skype last year when I was recruiting Santas for the Desktop Santa project. I interviewed hundreds of Santas, some of whom were located in Canada and the United Kingdom. Could you imagine my phone bill if I had used a conventional telephone service to call the U.K. and Canada? I can and it’s a bill I’m not willing to pay! I used Skype to stay in touch with my Santas who were outside of CONUS (Continental United States).

If you’d like to test Skype, I’m more than happy to help! Feel free to contact me and we’ll test Skype together.

The Tank

I snub my nose at today’s keyboards -- they’re too small and they have no bounce-back. I’m sure there’s a technical term for “bounce-back,” I just don’t know what it is!

To the rescue comes my IBM keyboard, which I affectionately refer to as The Tank. The Tank is 20” wide, 8.5” in-depth and jet black. The Tank is hefty -- I estimate it weighs approximately 10 pounds. The Tank’s claim to fame is that perfect bounce-back and tactile feel of the keys. I type very fast (120 WPM) and The Tank allows me maintain a fast typing speed.

I was lucky enough to find The Tank at a tag sale in San Francisco many years ago. The seller only wanted one buck for this beautiful piece of equipment. Can you believe it? An original IBM keyboard for $1.00. Score!

Hopefully The Tank will last forever so I don’t have to resort to using modern day keyboards!

No More Sliding at the PO

stamps.com is a fantastic tool and an incredible use of the Web. I login to my account, purchase and print postage for standard letters, postcards and special delivery packages.

The best part of using stamps.com is I no longer have to wait in line at my local Bronx post office, where my average wait time was nearly one hour. That’s a lost hour in my book – time which could be better spent working with my clients or snuffing out the competition.

Cool Timer (http://www.harmonyhollow.net/)

This little gem of a desktop timer is one of my fave freebies. I set the timer at the start of scheduled interviews, always setting the timer for 30 minutes. Cool Timer then bellows when time’s up. It’s free, it’s small and incredibly useful.

Just the Fax, Ma'am (All right ... I know it's an old joke!)

eFax gives me freedom – freedom from having yet another piece of equipment on my desk! In addition, the company’s monthly pricing is on par with what I would pay for a separate telephone line. You must scan hard copies of documents before faxing, but I do very little of that type of faxing, anyway. My outgoing faxes are either Word or WordPerfect documents.

Check them out at www.efax.com.

Funny Web Site Name; Great Little Tool

I love the “Memento” software from Guys with Towels (http://www.guyswithtowels.com/downloads.html). Little desktop sticky notes which I use to jot down fleeting thoughts and other ideas. Keep ‘em on your desktop or hide ‘em away when you’re done.

Must … Upload … Website

My FTP (file transfer protocol) software of choice is CuteFTP Professional by GlobalSCAPE. Easy to use and also loaded with enhanced capabilities. A girl’s gotta have a way to upload her site! See them on the web at http://www.globalscape.com.

Clip, Snip & Share

TechSmith’s (http://www.techsmith.com/) SnagIt is a fab-u-lous screen capture utility. SnagIt allows me to capture a wide variety of things, include text, images and web pages. The program is super easy to set up and use, as well.

I hope I’ll never be stranded on a deserted island – truth is, I’m afraid of deep water! In the unlikely event I’d ever have to run my business from an island, I’ll need to ensure I’ve got my top 10 tools handy and ready to go!

I’d love to hear from you. What are the tools you simply cannot live without?
